Rated one of the nation's best, New Trier High School is also one of the first to commit to recommendations established by the National Science Teachers Association for science laboratory design. Anticipating a need for more science classes, New Trier recently installed three state-of-the-art science labs designed and equipped to accommodate its biology, earth science, chemistry and physics classes.

Goals included optimum flexibility, efficiency and safety, as well as ADA compliance, and integration of advanced computer and A/V presentation technology. After intensive nationwide research, the architect and design team selected the "Universal Science Laboratory" approach. Hamilton was chosen to provide the laboratory workstations, fume hoods and additional casework to bring New Trier's vision to reality.

Ranging from 1,370 to 1,500 square feet, each lab provides a separate 28-seat lecture area, plus six spacious peninsula workstations to seat 24 students, a 4-student ADA island workstation, and large instructor demonstration table with integrated control of the computer network and A/V systems.

Throughout the labs, Hamilton's Wood Laboratory Casework, veneered in Plain-Sliced Red Oak, provides a rich, warm look. The casework features hardwood construction, traditional lipped overlay styling, full-extension drawers, and rugged, chemical-resistant epoxy resin work surfaces. Space-saving utility turrets give each workstation convenient access to electrical power, gas, and data jacks for desktop PCs. Hamilton's customized tall wood cases provide efficient tote tray and laptop computer storage. Also, a SafeAire demonstration fume hood has been customized with an additional side window for larger student viewing area.
